23.5.61. Sound. Alabama: press conference. John Malcolm Patterson explains his opposition to intervention in Alabama's legal machinery by federal marshals. Claims that such interventions are unconstitutional.
Silent - Patterson in his wood-panelled office while talking to interviewer.
Sound - Martin Luther King gives a press conference. "We had to go out some months ago and counsel with some of our own people who were getting to the point of returning violence and we don't wanna do that. We can't do that. We have won the moral victory." Silent - cut to audience members.
26.7.64. Silent. Rochester, New York. Wreckage of house after police helicopter crashes into it at the end of a weekend of rioting, killing the pilot and two occupants of the house. Firemen using hoses and climbing ladders. Footage of a burnt out car that was parked near the damaged building. Wreckage of the helicopter (almost unidentifiable). A man being helped away by firemen. Man being given oxygen while sitting on road. US ambulance driving away from the scene.
26.7.64. Silent. Rochester, New York. National Guardsman takes rifle out of cab of military truck. Footage of other military vehicles.
At night in Rochester: white males being frisked by soldiers. A small scythe shown to the camera (found on suspect). Military trucks full of troops on Rochester streets. African American man being handcuffed by guardsman and led away.
31.7.64. Silent. Brandon, Mississippi. African American church burned to ground. Remains of the destroyed church: stone steps and church bell standing in ashes.
6.8.64. Sound. Washington DC. Mrs. Schwerner, widow of Civil Rights worker found murdered in Mississippi, interviewed. Speaks of the gentleness of her husband and his commitment to the goodness in human beings.
6.8.64. Silent. Athens, Georgia. Members of the Ku Klux Klan arrested in Athens in connection with the murder of a African American educator, Lemuel Penn. Led to car where they attempt to cover their faces from flash of cameras. More men arrested try to hide their faces.
11.8.64. Sound. Atlanta, Georgia. Lester Maddox keeps his restaurant segregated despite court order. Crowd gathers around entrance to restaurant as he refuses to admit three African Americans. Maddox speaks to three smartly dressed African American men in the doorway. He states that he will close bar if they enter, resulting in the loss of forty jobs, and still refuses to integrate. A white man in the crowd attempts to punch one of the African American men but is restrained by other crowd members. Aerial shot of the three men being led away by police through a predominantly white crowd.
21.9.64. Silent. Biloxi, Mississippi. Federal Grand Jury begin probe into death of three Civil Rights workers. Judges entering court room. Man carrying boxes of records into the courthouse. Row of African American people sitting in chairs in a corridor.
